Bolton Lancashire supported the Puritans and parliament during the English Civil war. The town withstood many attacks but on the 28 May 1644 the town was plundered by troops under the Earl of Derby, many died and it became known as the Bolton massacre. After the civil war the Earl of Derby was captured and executed outside Ye Old Man & Scythe Inn Bolton.
